Amos & Andy Synopses
The Amos 'N' Andy radio series originated on WMAQ in Chicago on 19 March 1928, and eventually became the longest-running radio program in broadcast history, lasting almost 30 years. Amos 'n' Andy was conceived by Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll, two white actors who portrayed the characters Amos Jones and Andy Brown by mimicking so-called Negro dialect. In 1932 the series found its way to a nation wide audience airing the Blue Net, WJZ with a well known sponsor, Pepsodent. Correll and Gosden were still playing the lead roles and Bill Hay was the announcer. The series jumped networks and on April 3, 1939 CBS broadcasted the show for the first time. By late 1943 the radio audience found the Amos & Andy show once again on NBC. The show stayed with NBC until late 1948 where it was found once again on CBS and where it stayed until its last broadcasts in 1955. Through all these years Correll and Gosden played the lead roles.
